With a population of 6,544 in 2011, White Oak is a northeast Texas town that has grown in stature from being merely a bedroom community to Longview to earning its rightful status as a city in its own right. Named for two trees growing beside its first school, the community of White Oak grew rapidly during the oil boom of the 1930s and continued to increase in population after World War II. The city was incorporated in 1960 and by 1962 had a reported population of 1,250. By 1990, White Oak had become a suburb of Longview and had seen a more than fourfold increase in population in less than 30 years.
Today, White Oak, TX offers three parks that offer residents and visitors a variety of options to help them make the most of their leisure and recreation. City Park, the largest of the three, offers 45 acres of baseball and softball fields, tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds filled with colorful play equipment, park pavilions, and a spray pad water park. Park pavilions are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Fifteen-acre Penick Park features a picnic area with tables, hiking trails, a basketball court, and a playground. The park also offers a nine-hole disc golf course. No reservations are required for this park. Bingham Park, located behind the White Oak Schools, is a three-acre park offering picnic tables, which are available to the public also on a first-come, first-served basis. There are plenty of activities and lots of fun to be had by everyone at White Oak’s parks.
The Gregg County Historical Museum, located just a short drive from White Oak, TX, in Longview, offers a variety of historic exhibits. The Longview Museum of Fine Arts also offers art lovers who visit or reside in the greater Longview area, including White Oak, a varied collection of art exhibits and events.
White Oak’s average maximum August temperature is 94 degrees, making summer days hot, with minimum August temperatures dropping to a comfortable 73 degrees. From May through July, White Oak’s highs and lows are both comfortable, with temperatures ranging between the low to mid-60s and the mid to high 80s. September brings a bit of a respite from the mid-90s highs of August, leading into considerably cooler but still mild October and November temperatures. March and April temperatures are similar, though rainfall is somewhat higher in late spring than it is in early fall. Winter nights are cold, with the minimum January temperature averaging 34 degrees. January is also the month that brings the most rain to White Oak: approximately seven inches.
