About Tatum

While Tatum offers the small-town feel that East Texas is known for, residents of the community are still able to access amenities that make life interesting. The size of the city creates a community in which everyone knows their neighbors. While the city is a welcoming community that offers outdoor activities, the hot Texas summers can drive residents indoors. A well-maintained air conditioning system is the best way to beat the heat when the temperature rises past 100 degrees.

The area that is the city of Tatum today was originally home to the Caddo tribe of Native Americans. Explorers from France and Spain invaded the area and drove the Caddo tribe from the land. When pioneers moved into East Texas in the mid-1800s, a large plantation was built in the community by Albert Tatum and his family. Albert Tatum owned more than 4,000 acres of land in the area and soon after established the city of Tatum. While the city has had its ups and downs over its long history, it is a thriving community today.

There are 1,175 people living in 459 households in the city. Approximately 35 percent of households include one or more children. Just over half of households include a married couple.

Many visitors to the area come to the city to experience a variety of outdoor activities that are available directly outside of the city limits.

  • Martin Creek Lake State Park offers recreational activities including fishing, swimming and hiking. Visitors can backpack through the park and stay overnight in cabins.
  • Shepherd’s Pasture is a retreat center that offers church groups the opportunity to experience nature. The retreat is located in the woods of East Texas.

The small size of the community means that there are no museums located in the city limits, but residents do have the option to travel a short distance to museums located in surrounding cities.

  • The Michelson Museum of Art in Marshall was originally founded to collect and display the works of Leo Michelson. Collections in the museum now include the works of many other 20th century artists.
  • The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in Carthage highlights the contribution that musicians from Texas have made to country music.

Children in the city attend schools that are part of the local Independent School District. There are two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school located in the district.
